Baby registry

Ok, for all my mom-friends out there who have gone through this recently feel free to leave comments and help me out! I am attempting to register for Emma since we live in the middle of no where and it seems considerate to do so as soon as possible since many people will need to travel to go to purchase baby shower items. I've registered on Target and Babies 'R' Us but I'm having a little trouble knowing what to add. Here's the dilemma: (mother-in-law) has given us a crib, changing table, dresser, armiore, all the bedding, a couple of blankets, baby wash/shampoo, lotion, diaper rash cream, brush, 2 boxes of diapers, wipes, and various and sundry other items. Amanda, my sister-in-law, has a baby who will turn 1 right about the time Emma is born and is giving us clothers, a diaper genie, a breast pump (which she says is really nice- I haven't really researched them much yet), shoes, a "bebe pod" chair, and several other things. Jason and I have picked out a baby monitor that we absolutely have our hearts set on (it comes with a regular audio monitor and a sensor pad that goes under the crib mattress and can detect when the baby stops breathing- so cool!) on Target and some small stuff (like extra crib sheets in colors that match our bedding and rattles, teething toys, Baby Einstein DVDs, etc.) on both websites for people who can't afford to spend a lot. My question is: What else do I need? Am I missing something glaringly obvious?

  1. There are checklists online that can help. Nothing glaringly obvious comes to mind! People will want to give you clothes--that's everyone's favorite thing to buy. Sounds like you're well-equipped! Congratulations! Oh--if you plan to breastfeed, a "boppy pillow" is a must, plus two covers. Take it with you to the hospital. I'd register for a couple swaddler blankets (Kiddopotamus makes a good one). You might want a swing, one of those "activity center" toys that you set them in the middle of, supplies for bathing (including a bathtub that you can sit in your sink.) Have you picked out your car seat? I liked having an infant seat (e.g. Graco Snug Ride) plus a stroller (a travel system). Your baby will outgrow the seat in 6-12 months, but it is so convenient to be able to snap the seat in and out of the car, and into the stroller.

  2. Everything Sarah said is right.
You might want a Kick and Play. Ethan loves his. A front carrier so you can be hands free kinda. When you wear it you can only bend at the knees so washing clothes is out. A mobile for the crib is a must!! And make sure it runs on batteries for at least 15mins.
You will need lots of diapers!! And don't open them until you need them because Emma might grow out of them before you get to use them. Ethan used his Newborn ones for awhile because he was small when he was born but you never know what size they are until they pop out!
I have to tell you I don't think I got one thing off my registry at my shower. And mine was at BRU, target and walmart. Except for the things I registered for in our home town. Some people there would rather buy from home stores. Have you registered at any of them?
I personally think Gift Cards are the way to go! Eli and I used our gift cards for food and diapers.
I do love my wicker baskets. I got 2 of them filled with lots of great stuff like diapers, baby wash, wipes. Stuff you will always need more of. I use the wicker baskets for dirty and clean baby clothes. I do at least one load of baby clothes everyday.
If I think of anything else I'll let you know!

  3. Thanks for your help guys! One of the things Amanda is giving me is a boppy pillow. I don't know how many covers she has for it. And a swing. We picked out an activity center and a convertible car seat that has extra (removable) padding for infants and lasts until 65 pounds and/or 6 years old. We haven't registered here yet, but we definitely will when it gets closer. (And I know people here will get clothes even if I don't need them, so I definitely didn't want to register for them since my "out-of-towners" might think I actually needed some!) My family is also throwing a baby shower for us, so I decided to register online, too. I did forget the stroller though! Lol! I saw a "sling" style carrier that I liked a while ago, but it's from a small SAHM business and I'm not sure what to do. Maybe I should just put a registry on here. How did you do that Sarah? I'm hoping we can get some Target gift cards in case we don't get the monitor, car seat, etc. And if we do, we can always use a gift card for other baby stuff like diapers!Any more suggestions are welcome and appreciated too!

  4. I have a Maya wrap and a open carrier. I have used the open one more because Ethan likes to look around. There is a way to have the baby on your hip with the wrap but I don't know how to do it yet!
I think it sounds like you have got all the right stuff. Just remember that all you really "need" to have a baby is a baby! And maybe a few diapers!
Just go to Target or Walmart and get one of there scaning guns and go crazy! That's what my sister and I did. It was a lot of fun!

  5. Maya wraps are good for breastfeeding in public, or while on your feet (that skill may take a while to master.) Convertible car seats are great--but he advantage of infant seats (with a stroller system) is that you can move the baby while she's sleeping. Read that sentence and ponder what it means. If you have to take a baby out of the seat, as you do with most convertible car seats, she will wake up. It seems a bit extreme to buy a car seat that will only last her 6-12 months, but it will give you, cumulatively, hours of peace.

  6. This is Kirk - Register for more diapers - those darn things add up...WAY up. Also, wipes (we are still using those at 3 and see no end in sight). Sippy Cups are a must when they get older (the nipples wear out fast whether you use the dishwasher or wash them by hand, so why not stock up now. Chad & Kim gave us a medicine kit containing teething tabs, gas drops, diaper rash cream, etc. That was the most useful gift I remember receiving! The bouncer was a God-send! Wow - it's amazing how hard it is to remember 3 years ago! I think white hair must be caused by memory seeping out of one's brain! =) Glad to hear things are going well - hope to see you guys soon!
